Alisha Brown is CEO of the be well Health and Wellness Initiative (be well) and the senior vice president at The Foundation for Sustainable Urban Communities. The be well Health and Wellness Initiative (be well) is a grassroots movement of communities coming together to take control of the health of their communities by addressing the social determinants of health. Her work includes the creation of the be well Block Captain community engagement model, an evidence-based approach that is known nationally and is supported by various organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This model builds advocates in our most vulnerable communities to create solutions to our most complex public health challenges. Ms. Brown is deeply committed to building equitable systems that reflect the priorities of the communities they serve. Her leadership is grounded in the belief that sustainable health outcomes are achieved when residents are empowered, institutions are responsive, and policies are shaped by those most impacted.
Ms. Brown has raised and/or leveraged more than $50 million dollars to advance equity across the state of Colorado. She speaks locally, regionally, nationally and internationally to demonstrate the importance of grassroots involvement and civic engagement. As a graduate of Regis University, she earned a Masters of Nonprofit Management degree and was a Colorado Trust Fellow. Ms. Brown earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast journalism from Langston University. She also received a Certification in Public Health from the National Board of Public Health Examiners, is a graduate of the Regional Institute for Health and Environmental Leadership’s Advanced Leadership Training Program, Healthy Community Design Program. Ms. Brown serves on various boards including The Denver Foundation, The Colorado Access Foundation and Metropolitan State University’s Institute for Public Service Advisory Board. She previously served on the State of Colorado’s Health Equity Commission and the City and County of Denver’s Board of Environmental Health as the Chairwoman, The Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure and the Denver Social Equity and Innovation Advisory Board. Ms. Brown is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. She is a devote Christian active at the Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church where she serves on the liturgical dance ministry and as a writer for the Christian Scroll newsletter. Her favorite past times are spending time with her family, community, traveling, shopping and going to sporting events.
